Letter to the Editor: Attend Tuesday’s Council Meeting To Make Your Voice Heard On ‘Live Exponentially’

By AKKANA PECK
White Rock

Over the past few weeks I’ve read quite a few eloquent letters about why the proposed strapline “Live Exponentially” is unnecessary, embarrassing, or just plain stupid. Unfortunately, we already know that the council (except Pete Sheehey) doesn’t much care about letters to the editor.

So I hope the letter writers — and anyone else who cares about this issue — will show up at the council meeting this coming Tuesday evening, Dec. 9, when the council is reconsidering the contract. This is your chance to voice your opinion on whether Read More

Letter to the Editor: Raise Your Hand If You Know What ‘Exponentially’ Means

By E. JACOB
Los Alamos

“LIVE EXPONENTIALLY”? Ok, everybody who knows what exponentially means, raise your hand. Any visitor driving into Los Alamos and seeing that word and knows what it means without looking it up, raise your hand.

Gee, no reponses, what a surprise! Live EXPONENTIALLY, a little hard to do in a town that closes up when the labbies fly off the hill as the sun goes down.

Keep inquisitiveness alive with WHERE DISCOVERIES ARE MADE. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Time The Lights On Trinity … I’m Begging You

By JOANIE AHLERS
Los Alamos

Time the lights on Trinity … I’m begging you. I have been holding off on writing this letter because I was hoping that someone from Los Alamos County would recognize the problem and implement a solution.

I am out of patience. No one is more delighted with the new Smith’s Marketplace than me, however, when the State allowed the installation of a new (additional) traffic light at the easternmost entrance to the new Smith’s they created an unintended consequence … untimed traffic lights.

There are now three traffic lights within a third of a mile stretch of Trinity Drive. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Plea To Thief Who Stole From Heroes

By VICTOR M. MEDINA, owner
Manhattan Project  Restaurant

To a thief,

At the Manhattan Project Restaurant we have been collecting donations for Horses for Heroes (https:////www.horsesforheroes.org/) in Santa Fe, an organization that is working with veterans suffering from PTSD.

It is unconscionable that someone would steal some of the money that was donated. I find it hard to believe that you needed it more than they did.

If you were so desperate for money that you had to steal it, come talk to me we will help you out. You left all the $1 bills and for this we are thankful but you took all Read More

Letter to the Editor: Message Of Caution

By LESLEY OLSHER
WHITE ROCK

Here is a message of caution for those in White Rock who like to walk their dogs in the evening.

Last week, a friend was walking our dog around the Karen Circle area, off of N.M. 4. This was about 7-8 in the evening. As they continued their walk, she noticed three coyotes following them, stopping when they stopped. Our dog is an older gentle dog, so he does not walk very fast. She was frightened and said that they did not stop following for most of the walk.

We have not experienced this before in the 30 years that we have lived in White Rock. Not sure, is the food supply less this year? Read More

Letter to the Editor: Time To Stop Laughing And Get Serious

R. Wayne Hardie
Los Alamos

The County Council’s approval of the “Live Exponentially” brand for Los Alamos has had a couple of positive outcomes. First, it has united the citizens of Los Alamos unlike almost anything in recent memory–in particular, independent of political party, occupation, income, or age, almost everyone detests this brand.

For example, in a poll in the LADailyPost.com (https://ladailypost.comcontent/tagline-survey-majority-against-live-exponentially) just 8 percent, or 43 people out of 522 who voted, liked the

Letter to the Editor: Fundamental Question – What Does Community Seek From Branding?

TJ TAUB
Los Alamos

One of the many ways Los Alamos has spent money to seek – then ignore – advise was when LACDC brought Roger Brooks of Destination Development International (DDI) to town.

Now known as Roger Brooks International, the company provides community assessment, branding and marketing expertise to increase local revenues. If you go to his website you can download a free eBook titled “The Art of Branding a Community” – a short, concise description of how/how not to proceed (the same info shared with Los Alamos years ago).

It includes: a list of words NOT to use, e.g. Discover; Read More

Letter to the Editor: Perspective On Sloganeering

By KEVIN HOLSAPPLE
Los Alamos

“Where discoveries are made” was not developed as part of any County branding work, but rather was the result of a Chamber of Commerce community contest. There was a period of time after the Cerro Grande fire when the community went through quite a funk. To inspire more positive thought and vibe, the Chamber ran a community contest asking people to express what they were most proud about when talking to others about our community.

Several hundred entries were received and “discovery” was a recurring theme in many of them: discovery of an interesting hiking route;

Letter to the Editor: Thanks To All Who Helped With Holiday Arts And Crafts Fair

Marlane Hamilton
Executive Director
Los Alamos Arts Council

The hard work of many dedicated volunteers resulted in a successful Northern New Mexico Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair Saturday, Nov. 22. In addition to the Los Alamos Arts Council, the fair benefited from the efforts of several food vendors (Dave’s Dogs, Platero Fry Bread and Navajo Tacos, Houdini’s Kettle Corn and Grandma’s Kettle Corn) who provided the food and beverages for the event.

As always, a big thank you goes to our board members and volunteers who spent many hours in preparation, as well as time staffing the fair. LAAC is fortunate Read More
