Today Is National Fentanyl Prevention And Awareness Day

DEA News:

Today, Aug. 21, 2023 is National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day.

DEA seized more than 58.3 million fentanyl-laced fake pills in 2022.

The DEA Laboratory has found that of the fake pills analyzed, six out of ten now contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl.

State Police Arrest Las Cruces Man On Child Sex Crimes

NMSP News:

LAS CRUCES — Aug. 15, 2023, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Investigations Bureau began investigating allegations of sexual abuse of three children spanning 2020 to 2023 in Las Cruces.

Following an extensive investigation, including multiple forensic interviews, agents arrested Anthony Shoemaker, 52, of Las Cruces.  

Shoemaker was charged with multiple counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor, sexual exploitation of children and multiple counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor. The victims range in age from 5 to 12 years old.

FBI: Las Cruces Man Gets 9 Years For Firearms Offense

ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced Thursday, Aug. 17 that Mark Anthony Calzada was sentenced to 9 years in prison.

Calzada, 29, of Las Cruces, pled guilty in federal court Aug. 18, 2022, to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Rock Slide, Unstable Conditions Close N.M. 4 Near TA-39

Update: The road is reopened in both directions.

LAPD News:

The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) is reporting a road closure on N.M. 4 at mile marker 57 near Technical Area 39.

The road is closed in both directions due to a rock slide and unstable conditions.

NMDOT is on scene along with Los Alamos police officers. 

Motorists are advised to avoid the area until field crews can clear the roadway and deem it safe for passage. Read More

FBI: Fargo Man Pleads Guilty To Second Degree Murder And Voluntary Manslaughter In Indian Country

ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced that Shilo Aaron Oldrock, 30, and an enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe, pled guilty in federal court to second degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

Oldrock will remain in custody pending sentencing which has not been scheduled.

LAPD Passes 2023 Annual National Accreditation Review

LAPD News:

Los Alamos Police Chief Dino Sgambellone has announced that the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) has successfully completed the annual review of the advanced law enforcement accreditation program for the Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD). LAPD completed the week long review in July 2023.

LAPD has been fully accredited since 2018 and is one of three law enforcement agencies Nationally accredited within New Mexico. The other two agencies are the Farmington Police Department and New Mexico State Police.

ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, have announced that Josiah Alan Smith, 29, of Smith Lake and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, pled guilty in Federal Court to second degree murder.

Smith will remain in custody pending sentencing which has not been scheduled.

ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, have announced that Rumaldo Peshlakai pled guilty to being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Peshlakai, 43, of Tsayatoh, and an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, will remain in custody pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
