New Mexico State Police will be conducting Sobriety Checkpoints, Saturation Patrols, and Registration, Insurance and Drivers’ License Checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during the month of May 2017.

Charges Dismissed Against Lee Weinland

Almost four years to the day after being arrested for alleged criminal sexual penetration of a child under 13, the charges against Lee Weinland of Los Alamos have been dismissed by Assistant District Attorney Kent Wahlquist.

The dismissal without prejudice was filed April 28 in the First Judicial District Court in Santa Fe. Wahlquist declined to comment on the dismissal “due to the sensitive nature of the case”.

Judge Grants Katcher Time To Obtain Public Defender

Garrett Thayne Katcher of Los Alamos appeared Thursday in Los Alamos Magistrate Court for a pre-trial hearing on a charge of aggravated battery against a household member.

At the beginning of the proceedings, his attorney, Public Defender Tyr Loranger told Judge Pat Casados his attorney-client relationship with Katcher had collapsed due to behavior exhibited by Katcher in the hallway prior to court. He asked to be removed from the case. Casados gave Katcher until May 22 to obtain a public defender and set a status hearing for May 25.

A 28-year-old Los Alamos man has been charged with forgery and fraud after he allegedly took a check without the victim’s knowledge and used it to make a purchase at Smith’s Marketplace.

Elijah Meason was arrested April 21 by Los Alamos Police Department Det. Ryan Wolking following a recorded interview during which Meason allegedly admitted to the crimes.

Local Woman Charged With Shoplifting

Aleah Stahl, 36, of Los Alamos, has been charged with shoplifting, tampering with evidence and possession of a controlled substance following her arrest at Smith’s Marketplace April 12.

Stahl was allegedly observed by the store’s loss prevention manager selecting a phone charger and pencil case in the electronics aisle. Stahl then allegedly removed the charger from its plastic bag, took the inventory control tag off it and placed it in the pencil case.

Chief of Police Dino Sgambellone has released crime statistics for the first quarter of 2017, which were compiled by the Records Section of the Los Alamos Police Department.

Offenses reported as crime statistics are determined by the FBI Uniform Crime Report Program and are classified as crimes against persons (violent crime) and crimes against property. The offenses of murder (homicide), rape, robbery and aggravated assault make up the violent crime category.

Police Arrest Former Jailer Dustin J. Bingham

A former Los Alamos Police Department Detention Officer was arrested Wednesday and charged with eight counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor.

Dustin J. Bingham was arraigned before Judge Pat Casados today in Los Alamos Magistrate Court.

Bingham worked for LAPD from September 2012 to April 2015. He also served as a Santa Fe Sheriff’s Deputy from April 2015 until he resigned in February. The alleged crimes occurred between November 2015 and April 2017, several months after his employment at LAPD ended.
