County Reports On Phishing Scam Concern

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County’s email system, which is hosted as cloud-based services, was attacked in February in an apparent phishing scam. Phishing is a fraudulent attempt by email to obtain sensitive information for a malicious reason. While it is believed that the attack was contained to a single email account in the Public Works Department, the County turned the matter over to the Los Alamos Police Department for investigation. Ryan Barnes Cited For Assault On Local Bus Driver

Ryan Keith Barnes, 39, of Los Alamos was cited for assault on an Atomic City Transit bus driver March 1 after police were called to the transit center at the intersection of Diamond Drive and East Jemez Road.

The driver reported that after he took over his route for his shift, Barnes rode the bus for several hours without getting off but never caused a problem.

A 29-year-old Los Alamos man was arrested Feb. 24 at Los Alamos Medical Center on charges of assault on a police officer and battery on a police officer during an incident in the hospital’s emergency room.

Garrett Eckhart Heads To Court On Battery Charge

A preliminary hearing before Magistrate Judge Pat Casados is slated for March 9 for Garrett Eckhart, 35, of Los Alamos on charges of bribery of a witness, batter on a peace officer, and resisting, evading or obstructing a peace officer.

Eckhart was arrested Feb. 10 on a charge of aggravated battery after police responded to an address on Gold Street where they found a victim with injuries to his back and face. The victim was transported to Los Alamos Medical Center for treatment.

Police Nab Shoplifter Fleeing Scene In Yellow Jeep

Police stopped 22-year old Robert Abeyta of Espanola, Feb. 27, as he left the Smith’s Marketplace parking lot in Los Alamos in a yellow Jeep.

Cpl. Sheldon Simpson had been dispatched in response to reports of a shoplifting incident in which the suspect was seen leaving the scene. Simpson stopped Abeyta who admitted his license had been revoked, according to the police report.

Judge Mary L. Marlowe Sommers rendered sentenced on former Los Alamos County Transit bus driver Joseph Dimas in First Judicial District Court, Feb. 17, in Santa Fe.

The judge ordered Dimas to register as a sex offender, remain on supervised probation for 10 years and avoid all contact with minors under the age of 16 with the exception of his own children.

SANTA FE – Today in the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Antonio “Moe” Maestas’ (D-Albuquerque) House Bill 175 passed by a 7-6 vote. HB 175 bans the use of isolated confinement for pregnant women and minors in New Mexico prisons and jails. It also sets a 48-hour maximum for solitary confinement of inmates with severe mentally illness.
