Fourth Of July Weekend Activities At Bandelier: Stars, Talks, Crafts And New Citizens

The Fourth of July weekend promises to be a lot of fun at Bandelier National Monument, with activities of all kinds. 

It all begins Thursday, when the Candelaria family from San Felipe Pueblo will be demonstrating traditional pottery making behind the Visitor Center, and there also will be solarscope and binocular viewing in that area. A Night Sky Program at the Juniper Campground amphitheater opens with an astronomy talk at 8:30 followed celestial viewing with giant telescopes. Santa Fe National Forest Offices Closed July 4

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – All Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) offices will be closed Monday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Forest offices will resume regular business hours Tuesday, July 5.

There are no fire restrictions on the SFNF. Visitors are reminded that fireworks and explosives are prohibited on federal lands. Law enforcement officers, fire personnel and recreation staff will be patrolling over the 4th of July weekend to ensure visitor safety.

Lightning Starts Small Fire At Valles Caldera Preserve

JEMEZ SPRINGS – A new wildland fire is burning in the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The Big Hat fire, discovered after last week’s thunderstorms, is estimated to be approximately two acres in size.

It is located on Banco Bonito, east of the staging area in the southwestern portion of the preserve. The fire, caused by lightning, is creeping through pine needles and surface fuels, occasionally flaring up in jackpots of dead and downed wood; the entire fire area is in a portion of the preserve’s forest that had been thinned over Read More

The Family YMCA in Los Alamos is hosting its annual Firecracker 5K Family Fun Run Monday, July 4.
 
The 5K is open to all ages that want to walk, run, or jog in this festive event. Prizes will go to the top male and female finishers in Kid, Youth, Adult, Adult 60+, and Dog Jogger.
