Racing Southwest’s annual Jemez Cruise is Sunday, leaving Bernalillo from the Santa Ana Star Casino’s parking lot at 11 a.m. Many different makes and models of cars will participate in this event.

Aquatic Center Hosts Dive-in Movie Friday

AQUATIC CENTER News:

The Walkup Aquatic Center is hosting a movie party in the pool 7-9 p.m. Friday. The film is “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”

The water will be warmed up for viewers to enjoy a theater-like experience while in the pool. Popcorn, treats, beverages, and glow sticks for everybody are included in the admission fee.

Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Aquatic Center. The event is limited to 125 participants, so get your tickets early. Read More

The Valles Caldera Trust Board will meet at 1 p.m., today, April 24 at its administrative offices in Jemez Springs.

Items on the agenda include an update on the search for a new executive director, presentations on restoration activities and planning, as well as weather status, stream flow and post-fire successional recovery. The meeting is open to the public.

Registration Opens For Los Alamos County Recreation Summer Camp Programs

Registration for the Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation & Open Space Division’s Summer Camp Programs will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, April 26.

The lobby of the Walkup Aquatic Center will be opened at midnight for parents to wait inside.

The Bear Camp program is for youth entering Kindergarten through 6th grade and Bear Camp Unplugged is back and this traveling program is geared toward older campers and designed to be in a more independent atmosphere. At 10 a.m. Sunday, April 27 rangers will lead a hike up Oak Canyon (a.k.a. Church Canyon). The hike begins at Jemez Historic Site (formerly Jemez State Monument). This is a strenuous hike of about 1.5 miles over rough terrain and hikers should bring water, sturdy shoes, sunscreen and a sack lunch.

Local snowboarder Cade Van Etten, age 9, placed 16th out of 40 in his age group at the USASA National Championships April 8 in Copper Mountain, Colo. This is an amazing showing, since Cade competes in the 13 and under category. He is competing against kids up to four years older than he.

Good running weather accompanied 32 runners and walkers on Tuesday night’s pace race that started and ended at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink. 

Five runners achieved estimated running times with an error under 25 seconds. Best predictor was Laura McClellan (9 sec.), followed by Heidi Bjorklund (18 sec.), Liz Mcdonald (21 sec.), Nikol Strother (22 sec.) and Roy Cope (24 sec.).
