Rory Gauthier at Bandelier National Monument announced a last-minute opportunity to watch grafting being done on the apple trees in the old orchard near the Visitor Center in Frijoles Canyon.

“We didn’t know when the supplies would arrive, and the grafting has to be done almost immediately. So it will be done beginning at 4 p.m. today. Anyone who is interested is welcome to come.”

Sheriff’s Association’s High School Golf Scholarship Tournament April 10

SHERIFF’S ASSOCIATION News:

The New Mexico Sheriff’s Association’s High School Golf Scholarship Tournament is noon Thursday, April 10 at Kirtland Air Force in Albuquerque. Lunch is provided.

The proceeds collected by each sheriff in their county are awarded to a local graduating senior. Cost for participating in the tournament is $100 per player. Businesses can sponsor a hole for $150.

Only a few hours remain for hunters to purchase a lottery draw chance for the revamped 2014 Valles Caldera Trust Elk Hunt. Entries must be postmarked or received by MIDNIGHT TONIGHT.

Bandelier National Monument has joined a number of parks in completing 3D laser scans of important archeological sites. At Bandelier, the scans were made of the western half of Long House Pueblo, located along the main trail near the Visitor Center and familiar to thousands of visitors.

SANTA FE—The public is invited to support Santa Fe National Forest’s Española Ranger District with fun and challenging trail projects. Five workdays will be held this spring to build new trail sections on the Dead Dog and Winsor Trails. Volunteers are welcome to help.

Project locations include the Dead Dog Trail, located west of Santa Fe in the Caja del Rio, and the Winsor Trail, located east of Santa Fe off of N.M. 475 between the Norski Trail and Forest Service Road 102.

The Atomic City Road Runners Club is kicking off its 41st season of pace races at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 at the Canyon Rim Trailhead on East Road (N.M. 502) across from the Co-operative Market.
 
The season runs through early October with races conducted weekly at various sites throughout Los Alamos County. T-shirts will be available for members at the end of the season.

Southwest Jemez Mountains Landscape Restoration Project DEIS Available For Public Comment

SANTA FE—Forest Supervisor Maria T. Garcia announced today that the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Southwest Jemez Mountains Landscape Restoration Project (SJMLRP) is available for public comment. 

The DEIS seeks to authorize treatments that include:

  • Prescribed fire;
  • Mechanical forest restoration treatments;
  • Meadow and riparian rehabilitation; and
  • Archeological site protection within Santa Fe National Forest’s 110,000-acre portion of the project.

Creativity Flows Through Public Meeting on County’s Trail Signage System

County Open Space Specialist Craig Martin was determined to bring out the creativity in community members attending Tuesday evening’s public meeting at Fuller Lodge on the County’s Trail Signage System project.
