SFNF’s Coyote Ranger District Office Opens

SFNF News:

District Ranger Andrew Vigil, from Santa Fe National Forest, announced this week that the Coyote Ranger Station has reopened. 

The office, located on New Mexico Highway 96 in Coyote, has been closed since early December when a break in the sprinkler system caused severe flooding throughout the building. Since then, employees have been working out of neighboring offices in Cuba and Espanola.

For Resident Safety – SFNF Proposing 10-year Shooting Closure Along Caja del Rio

SFNF News:

The Santa Fe National Forest’s Española Ranger District is proposing a 10-year shooting closure along the east boundary of the Caja del Rio, east of Santa Fe, to protect the lives and property of those who live adjacent to the Forest boundary.

Shooting a firearm within the National Forest is allowed; however, in order to protect adjacent property owners, the area has been closed since May 24, 2001. Due to an increase in development on private land near the Forest boundary, there is a greater need to enforce the closure to keep residents safe.

The Atomic City Road Runners Club opened its 41st pace race season Tuesday on the Canyon Rim Trail with 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 mile distances available.

Spring Time Splash Bouts Begin April 7

  • Pool fun and adventures are kicking off at the Walkup Aquatic Center

Beginning Monday, April 7 through Friday, April 11, the Aquatic Center kicks off with the Spring Fling at the pool.

The obstacle course will be up and running 1-3 p.m. each day. The Aquatic Center also offers a discount for youth 1-4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Bandelier’s Chief Ranger Tom Betts, a 34-year veteran ranger for the National Park Service (NPS), has been named Intermountain Region recipient of the Harry Yount Award.

The annual award, named after the first U.S. national park ranger, recognizes excellence in the field of “rangering.” Betts and seven other regional recipients are now the finalists for the national Harry Yount Award, which will be presented in June in Washington, DC.
