Weekly Fishing Report: Oct. 24, 2023

This will be the last week to fish several popular fishing lakes in Northern New Mexico. Clayton Lake, Morphy Lake and the Charette Lakes will close to fishing Oct. 31 in Northeast New Mexico. Laguna del Campo near Los Ojos will also close Oct. 31 to fishing. The closures are to protect migrating waterfowl.

The State Game and Fish Department has begun its Winter Trout Stocking Program in several bodies of water, including Tingley Beach in Albuquerque. The program will soon be expanded to many of the small lakes and municipal ponds in Southern Read More

Electrical Fire Burns Press Box At North Mesa Ball Fields

LAPD News:

An electrical fire this afternoon has burned the press box at the North Mesa Ball Fields.

Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) and Los Alamos Fire Department personnel had responded to the scene after the dispatch center received calls from the public around 2:03 p.m. today stating that the dugout at the ball fields was on fire.

Topper Girls Soccer ‘Kick For The Cure’ Fundraiser Oct. 24

 

LAHS News:

The Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Girls Soccer Teams “Kick for the Cure” games scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Sullivan Field – including the 4 p.m. Varsity game against Taos and JV Game against Santa Fe – will raise funds for breast cancer through a raffle and chance to shoot on the goalkeepers.

It was previously announced that funds raised from these “Kick for the Cure” games would go to the Los Alamos Council on Cancer, but there has been a change in charity donation due to unforeseen circumstances.

The Hilltopper boys and girls varsity and JV cross country teams headed to Northglenn, Colorado to face a contingent of strong Colorado teams at the Pat Amato Classic.

This meet has become a tradition of sorts for the top 14 Hilltopper runners and the results this year did not disappoint. Out of 27 Hilltopper runners that completed the 5k course, 20 were able to run career personal bests for the distance.

The fishing for kokanee salmon during the early part of the snagging season, which opened Oct. 1, has been slow. This is not unusual and the fishing should pick up later this season. One option while the snagging is slow is to fish for trout using conventional angling methods near where the salmon are running. One of the best baits during this time is fresh salmon eggs called roe. If you do get lucky enough to snag a female salmon, clean them immediately. The Los Alamos High School (LAHS) Hilltoppers varsity girls soccer team overpowered the Moriarty Pintos with a final score of 7-0 on Thursday at Sullivan Field.

Sophomore Dayja Fellers led the Hilltopper offense with two goals and two assists.

Freshmen Gracie Haangenstad and Margaret Steinkamp each scored two goals, and senior Meredith Brown scored one.
