Spring runoff from the melting snowpack took off with a bang last week. Streamflows increased dramatically in rivers throughout Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.

The Jemez River drew the most attention and is a good example of how quickly conditions can change. It was flowing April 4 at 121 cubic-feet-per-second, which was near normal. By April 9, it had increased to 396 cubic-feet-per-second and was well-above normal. April 12, the Jemez was a roaring torrent at 1,280 cubic-feet-per-second. The Los Alamos High School Hilltoppers hosted the Española Sundevils Saturday for a district doubleheader at Overlook Park in White Rock.

The Hilltoppers dominated both games, with a final score of 12-2 in the first game and 11-2 in the second  – improving their district record to 7-1.

The Team is on the road today for a non-district game at 3 p.m. against Bernalillo.

Athlete Reese Hill Of Los Alamos Competes In United States Snowboard And Freeski Nationals At Copper Canyon

The Los Alamos High School tennis team competed April 7-8 in the Albuquerque Academy Tournament. The boys team placed 2nd in the tournament. They had wins over Belen, Robertson and Cibola and lost to Albuquerque Academy in the finals (1-8). The girls team also competed in the Albuquerque Academy tournament and placed 8th. Pickleball is growing in popularity across the country and Los Alamos is getting in on the hype.

Los Alamos resident and Pickleheads co-Founder Brandon Mackie said 36.5 million people across the U.S. play the game, earning it the sport with the biggest participation numbers.

The Los Alamos High School Varsity Hilltoppers had a home double header scheduled last Saturday against the Pojoaque Elks.

The home matchup was moved to Pojoaque High School but was still played as a district home game for the Toppers.
