NMDOT Prepares For Annual Good Friday Pilgrimage To El Santuario De Chimayó

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is actively preparing for the annual Good Friday pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayó, a tradition that draws thousands of walkers from across the region.

Crews have been working for weeks to prepare and will start 12-hour shifts this evening and will continue through Saturday to ensure pedestrian safety along key routes.

To support the pilgrimage, NMDOT has implemented a range of safety measures:

LAPD Reminds Commuters Of Pilgrimage Into Chimayó

This Friday, April 18, thousands of participants from our community and surrounding areas will take part in the annual pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayó.

This sacred tradition brings a significant increase in pedestrian activity along highways not typically frequented by foot traffic, including N.M. 502, N.M. 501, U.S. 84/285 and N.M. 76.

Motorists: Please be vigilant and exercise caution while traveling these routes, as many pilgrims will be walking along the highways throughout the day and into the evening.

Bandelier’s Summer Shuttle Service Begins May 14, 2025

Bandelier National Monument is beginning its free summer shuttle service May 14, 2025 to Frijoles Canyon. The shuttle, provided by Atomic City Transit, boards at the Frey Trail Parking Lot in the park and starting at 10 a.m. runs every 10 minutes.

Unlike previous years, the shuttle is not mandatory unless the parking lots in the canyon are filled up. Also, there will be no shuttle service to the White Rock Visitor Center. This view features some of the most colorful rock formations within the national park. NCRTD Blue Bus To Provide Special Express Service From Pojoaque For 2025 Pilgrimage To Santuario De Chimayó

NCRTD News:

The North Central Regional Transit District (NCRTD) will again provide special Express Bus service for the annual pilgrimage to the historic Santuario de Chimayó shrine in Chimayó.

In addition to fare-free service from Española to Chimayó on Route 150 along N.M. 76, the Blue Bus Santuario Express Route 151 will be operational on Good Friday, April 18, offering alternative, free round-trip express service from The Cities of Gold Casino Bus stop in Pojoaque to Chimayó.

Another serious traffic accident on N.M. 502/Main Hill Road on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The cause: too many vehicles traveling at too high speed.

There is one more day to comment on the DOE draft Sitewide Environmental Impact Statement for LANL. The draft EIS covers transportation as an impact of LANL operations.

You can comment on the draft EIS though 5 p.m. April 10, 2025, and ask DOE to take more aggressive actions to reduce the number of vehicles on our roads and to reduce the speeds of these vehicles.

N.M. 502/Main Hill Road Reopened At 6:18 PM To Traffic

COUNTY News:

N.M. 502/Main Hill Road reopened at 6:18 p.m. today after being closed in both directions due to an accident this afternoon involving multiple vehicle.

The most recent report indicates one person was seriously injured in the crash and transported to Los Alamos Medical Center.
