County: Drive With Caution On NM 502 This Weekend

COUNTY News:

Drivers are asked to exercise caution this weekend as emergency utility work along New Mexico State Road 502 may hinder traffic, according to officials from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU).

DPU contractor Dub-L-EE Construction will be boring alongside N.M. 502 to replace a section of line that failed early Thursday morning. Traffic control devices will be in the westbound lane from Eastgate Drive to Main Gate Park.

After a brief delay, Bandelier National Monument is beginning its free summer shuttle service to Frijoles Canyon on June 14, 2023.  

“We are pleased to offer this service to our visitors as in past summers,” Superintendent Patrick Suddath said. “This is one of our busiest times of the year. Cleaning & Fog Sealing At Municipal Building Parking Lot Friday And Saturday June 2-3

COUNTY News:

GM Emulsion along with Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets Division will be cleaning the Municipal Building parking lot 8 a.m. to noon this Friday, June 2, in preparation for fog sealing. This will not impact parking Friday.  

Saturday, June 3, weather permitting, the Municipal Building lot, as well as the diagonal spots along Iris Street will be closed for fog sealing. Signs will be posted.

Update: One Lane Open On Truck Route … Expect Delays

The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) has just announced that one lane is now open on the Truck Route following the rollover of a dump truck this morning. One person was transported for injuries.

Intermittent traffic will now be allowed to travel in both directions but one lane still needs to be closed to mitigate hazardous material spillage.

Scene of a vehicle crash this morning in which this dump truck overturned at the bottom of the Truck Route (East Jemez) at mile marker # 9. One person was transported for injuries. As a long-time motor vehicle driver in Los Alamos County, you could never pay me enough to ride a bicycle in Los Alamos County.

The following are a variety of vehicular issues which affect bicycle safety:

  1. It is a poor driving decision to pull into an oncoming traffic lane in order to pass a bicycle.
  2. Many minivan drivers are typically distracted with cell phones or disciplining kids in the back seat.  The driver’s focus may not be on bicycle traffic.
