Daily Postcard: A little Plumbeous Vireo on its nest Friday in Upper Water Canyon. Vireos weave little basket nests that hang from branches rather than sitting on top of branches. Their nests are often out in the open, and occasionally, vireos even sing while sitting in their nests. Three species nest in Los Alamos: Plumbeous, Warbling, and Gray (only in White Rock). Daily Postcard: This Mississippi Kite spent considerable time Thursday evening perched near the top of a tall tree on Richard Court in White Rock. According to All About Birds, these raptors are between the size of a crow and a goose and most commonly found in the Southeast and some prairies in Texas and Oklahoma. They can also be found along parts of the Rio Grande in New Mexico. Topper Softball Falls To Belen Eagles

The Los Alamos High School Topper softball team fell to the Belen Eagles 0-16 in a state playoff game Saturday on the softball fields at the Cleveland High School Sports Complex. This game was on the consolation side of the bracket of the State Softball Championships and ended the Toppers’ season.
