PHYLLIS ABBIE KIRKPATRICK July 8, 1938 – Oct. 18, 2024

Phyllis was born July 8, 1938 to George Nelson and Irma (Cousins) Furbeck, in Mexico City, Mexico. Phyllis’s fond memories of growing up in Mexico City include Sunday dinners after church with her family, friends at the American School, and earthquakes during which the city seemed to rock on the lake. She loved the sight of the mountains all around the city.

Maria Jönsson studied textiles at Sigtuna Folk College in Sweden in the mid 1980s. She then went on to receive a BFA and MA in Studio Art Fiber/Fabric at Northern Illinois University in 1989/1991. During her years in Sweden she learned more traditional weaving techniques. In the US she explored and experimented with non-traditional materials in weaving such as metal, wire, or any material that could be woven on a loom.

After moving to New Mexico in the 1990s she continued to create and sell her fiber art while building a career as an archaeologist. Read More

Formerly Incarcerated People Can Now Vote

This election is the first time that individuals leaving correctional facilities can register and vote, even if they are on probation and parole. The law that allowed people who had served their time for felony convictions to vote had been on the books but was snared in bureaucracy until 2023.

The New Mexico Voting Rights Act, passed that year, enabled the law and was upheld by the Santa Fe District Court, which required implementation by the Secretary of State and county clerks.

SANTA FE — The New Mexico court system is undertaking a comprehensive evaluation of policies, programs, and facilities to determine the extent to which individuals with disabilities may be restricted in their access to courthouses across the state.
