The comb of honeybees has fascinated people for centuries. Marcus Terentius Varro, a Roman scholar, proposed in 36 BC that hexagons with equal sides would take the least total perimeter when dividing a surface into regions of equal area.
 
Stated differently, bees do not have to produce as much beeswax for storage containers when compared to square or triangular containers if the containers are hexagonal in shape.

Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus is inviting the community to come enjoy and participate in the Chamisa Elementary Recycle Art Show from 5:30-7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4.

Girlfriend Judy Bentley and I traveled to Ruidoso a few weekends ago for recreation, and I was reminded on our way out of town that one of my favorite bakeries in all of New Mexico is there: Cornerstone Bakery, on Sudderth Drive, the main street through the Village.
 
All of their baked goods are scrumptious; over the years of traveling occasionally to Ruidoso for work, what I found myself packing back to Los Alamos to share with the family were the “Cappuccino Muffins.”

Espanola YMCA Teen Center was nicely surprised when a box of basketballs and backpacks arrived from basketball star and Los Alamos native Alex Kirk.
 
Espanola YMCA staff and teens extend a special thank you to Kirk and his foundation, the AK53 Foundation, for donating the basketballs and backpacks to the Teen Center.
 
Playing basketball is among the favorite activities for teens at the center so the basketballs will be put to great use.

Y Offers Kid’s Climbing Club Wednesdays

Need something new to do on those Wednesday afternoons with your kids?
 
The Family YMCA is now offering a Kid’s Climbing Club 2-4 p.m., Wednesdays. This program is open to elementary school-age climbers of all skill levels (with their parent/guardian).
 
Cost is $5 per visit (Free for Y Members) and includes all climbing gear needed.
 
The YMCA’s Climbing wall staff will provide belaying and assistance to climbers, but adults must stay in the program with youth to provide supervision (younger siblings welcome to watch).

Live Nativity At United Church Christmas Eve

The United Church is planning a living Nativity 5-8 p.m., Christmas Eve in the parking lot west of the Church at 2525 Canyon Road, across Canyon Road from the Aquatics Center.

The nativity will be held between a family service at 4 p.m. and a candlelight service at 11 p.m. and the public is invited to attend and interact with the Living Nativity, greet the Holy Family, shepherds and kings and pet the stable animals.

Coyote Killing Contest Set For Halloween Weekend

ESTANCIA  A statewide coyote killing contest set for Halloween weekend gives the holiday a whole new definition of horror.
 
Running Oct. 31-30, the 5th Annual Youth Coyote Hunt, organized by an Estancia resident, advertises prizes and payouts to adults and children under 17 based on coyotes killed, including special honors for the most kills and the largest and smallest animals shot.
