With apologies to the non-football fans, I wish to contrast the problems of Tom Brady and the under-inflated footballs to the recent three million gallon spill into the Animas River near Silverton, Colo.

I call that spill of acid mine drainage the “Orange Flush”, not to be confused with the Denver Bronco football defense, the Orange Crush.

The purpose of this short piece is to examine the facts regarding the spill and the environmental impacts.

SANTA FE  The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) today hosted a public symposium on Forest Plan Revision to give the community an overview of the process and an opportunity to hear from Forest Service specialists who recently completed assessments of the current ecological, economic and social conditions on the forest.

The tradition of celebrating Halloween with lit jack-o-lanterns outside of Fuller Lodge continues 6-9 p.m., Oct. 31.
 
It will be the 13th year the Los Alamos Arts Council (LAAC) has hosted this free event in the community.
 
Hundreds of pumpkins featuring a wide of assortment of carvings-from iconic movie characters to toothy jack-o-lantern grins-will be shown. The public is welcomed to bring their carved pumpkins 1-4 p.m., Oct. 31 to the lodge to be included in the display.

SANTA FE  The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced that travelers should expect delays in northwest New Mexico this week due to trucks hauling extremely heavy loads to Utah.
 
The loads – which are the heaviest to ever be transported on New Mexico roadways – are transformers that will arrive in Thoreau, New Mexico, by train and will then be loaded onto the trucks.

Udall, Heinrich, Luján Respond To Evaluation Of Gold King Mine Spill Highlighting EPA Responsibility

WASHINGTON — Thursday Oct. 22, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján responded to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation’s Technical Evaluation of the Gold King Mine Incident.
 
The report found that responsibility for the mine blowout, which spilled 3 million gallons of wastewater into rivers in New Mexico and Colorado, rests with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
 
The report points out that an EPA mine remediation crew attempting to reopen the mine failed to take into consideration the engineering complexity
