Community Invited To 2023 Solar Eclipse Viewing Event At Los Alamos High School Courtyard Saturday Oct. 14

Community members of all ages are invited to view the annular solar eclipse in the Los Alamos High School inner courtyard 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.
This free event features free eclipse glasses, viewing safety information, projection of the eclipse on a large outdoor screen, National Park Service programming, educational booths and science activities for all ages, school clubs, music and more.
All activities will pause 10-11 a.m. to allow participants to view the eclipse as it moves in and out of the annular phase with the maximum eclipse happening at 10:36:57 a.m.

Update: Accident has been cleared and traffic is moving along smoothly.
Traffic Alert:
Los Alamos County has announced that a traffic accident on the Main Hill Road (N.M. 502) between the White Rock Y (N.M. 4 intersection) and the Totavi gas station has led to the closure of one eastbound lane, resulting in traffic delays. The incident occurred earlier today.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department is on scene, overseeing the situation and awaiting the arrival of a tow truck to clear the accident site.

Los Alamos County Atomic City Transit Service Schedule On Indigenous People’s Day Holiday Monday Oct. 9
Los Alamos County Atomic City Transit (ACT) has announced that fixed route bus service will not operate on Monday, Oct. 9 in observance of the Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
ACT will operate a Dial a Ride Service 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Residents must call (505) 661-RIDE (7433) to schedule a ride on a first come first serve basis beginning at 5:45 a.m. Monday. The last time is 5:15 p.m. to reserve a ride.
Have this information available when scheduling a ride:
- Rider’s name;
- Pick-up and drop off locations; and
- Phone number.

County: Reservoir Closes For Road Repair Starting Today
The Los Alamos Canyon Reservoir and the road leading to it will be closed starting today, Sept. 29, through the end of November for repairs to the damaged stream channel.
Neither parking nor hiking will be allowed during that time period.
The repair project is a collaboration among the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU), Keystone Restorative Ecology and Natural Channel Design. Large equipment and dump trucks are being brought in to move sediment from the reservoir so that it can be used in rebuilding the road.

The Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD) has announced that fingerprint services have resumed as of today. Utility bills are about to get higher. Los Alamos County Council approved 6-1, with Councilor David Reagor opposed, to increase the electric rates as well as the service charges.
The rate hike was approved during Tuesday night’s regular meeting.

Los Alamos County Parks Division reminds the community that tree pruning begins Monday, Sep. 25, and will continue throughout the week at Ashley Pond Park and along Central Avenue.
Sidewalks may be closed to pedestrians at times for safety reasons.
Pruning is an important management measure that will extend trees’ health, safety and life. There are many different pruning needs depending on the trees’ location, size and growth habits.
Pruning falls into the following categories:
