County Library System Hosts Winter Carnival Of Reading

Los Alamos County Library System is hosting a reading challenge for all ages that runs through Jan. 31, 2022. Come one, come all to the Winter Carnival of Reading!

Participants will read books and complete fun activities to earn virtual badges and prizes. Every  participant to complete the challenge will receive a free book.

In addition, three grand prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Youth;
  • Teen; and
  • Adult.

County: Code Compliance Survey Open To Everyone

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos community members are encouraged to take a survey currently underway by the Los Alamos County Community Development Department (CDD) and its consultant DPS. 

The survey is specifically seeking input on the County’s Chapter 18 Nuisance Code.

Open until Dec. 27, individuals can access the online survey by visiting the Chapter 18 Nuisance Code Update webpage. CDD officials advise that the survey will work in most browsers with the exception of Internet Explorer.

Thursday, Dec. 9, the Los Alamos High Country 4-H Team made baked goods to send to each Fire Station and Police Station in town as a thank you for everything they do for the community.

The members each brought a baked good, (cookies, bars or snacks of some kind) and then combined the baked goods into individual containers, which were given to the first responders.

New Mexico COVID-19 Update Dec. 10: 1,468 New Cases, Totaling 329,778 With 13 New Deaths And 278,030 Recovered

SANTA FE — New Mexico state health officials announced 1,468 additional COVID-19 cases Friday.

Los Alamos County reports 8 new cases Friday, bringing the total to 967 people who have tested positive for COVID-19. (County totals are subject to change upon further investigation and determination of residency of individuals positive for COVID-19.)

This update includes 13 new deaths Friday in New Mexico related to COVID-19 and a 7-Day positivity rate of 11.5 percent.

Eco Station And Overlook Convenience Center Hours For Christmas And New Year’s Holiday

With Christmas and New Year’s Eve quickly approaching, the county staff at the Eco Station remind the Los Alamos community of changes to the trash and recycle services.

Christmas Holiday Service Change

The County observes the Christmas holiday Friday, Dec. 24. There will be no trash collection service provided Friday, Dec. 24. For Los Alamos residents or commercial customers whose normal trash day falls on this date, county staff advise that materials be placed out on the curb on Wednesday, Dec. 22.

County Asphalt Patching Operation Continues Dec. 13-17

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets Division mobile asphalt and concrete patching operation that began Monday, Dec. 6, will continue conjointly with Allied 360.

The operation is taking place throughout Los Alamos and White Rock to repair damage to roads that resulted from emergency utility line work.

Traffic controls will be in place for motorists in the vicinity of the work. The operation is occurring Monday through Friday, Dec. 13-17, weather permitting and may continue for several more weeks until all necessary repairs have been made.

County Issues Clarification On Code Compliance Survey

Los Alamos County Community Development Department (CDD) and DPS Consulting, are in the process of revising Los Alamos Code of Ordinance Chapter 18 Environment Article II Nuisances.

An invitation was mailed Nov. 22 and a reminder notification Dec. 1, to a random sample of 5,400 selected households in Los Alamos and White Rock to provide feedback to CDD and DPS. The invitations included a unique survey link and pin, along with instructions on how to take the survey.

Tempers flared Tuesday night but in the end Los Alamos County Council passed the code ordinance no. 02-321, which amends Chapter 16 of the County Code to adopt local regulations for cannabis retail sales as well as the text regarding home occupations.

After 15 years working for the Los Alamos Police Department, Deputy Police Chief Jason Wardlow-Herrera is retiring.

His final day at the department is Dec. 30.
