By PETE SHEEHEYOne of the major issues in this town is water: do we have enough to keep this a green community, at an affordable cost? Since I was elected to County Council two years ago, I have been gathering facts about water in Los Alamos. Much of this information is in the “2006 Long Range Water Supply Plan for Los Alamos County”, on the county website here.

Richardson Promoted to Deputy Utilities Manager

Utilities Manager Tim Glasco of the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities has announced the promotion of Jack Richardson, PE, to the position of deputy utilities manager for gas, water and sewer services.
This position was vacated by Glasco July 6 when he was appointed Utilities Manager by the County Council.
Richardson serves as the senior engineer for DPU’s Engineering Division. He has direct oversight of construction design and project management of all DPU’s capital improvement projects.

Pet of the Week: Kona the German Shepherd Mix

Kona is a 4-year-old spayed female German shepherd mix. She was surrendered due to not tolerating the excessive attention of the young child in the household.
She would prefer a home with no kids, as she gets a little nervous in new situations and prefers gentle pets and attention on her own terms. On the leash, Kona walks like the gentle lady that she is.

Atomic City Transit is soliciting comments regarding the Los Alamos Comprehensive Transit Study and Updated Five-Year Service Plan.

Central Avenue Now Closed Between Post Office And 15th

The recent significant rain has caused delays to the Central Avenue Improvements Project. In order to maintain the project schedule and increase safety along the section of Central Avenue currently under construction, a change to the traffic control plan was required.
Therefore, effective at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, Central Avenue between the Post Office entrance and 15th Street has been fully closed and will remain closed for the next 4-6 weeks.

County’s Bear Camp Vacates Ice Rink in Canyon for Remainder of Season
COUNTY News:
As a result of continued rainy weather conditions this week and the potential for flash flooding in Los Alamos Canyon, LAPD Emergency Management Coordinator Philmont Taylor has ordered the County’s Bear Camp program to vacate the Ice Rink in the canyon for the remainder of the summer camp season.
Atomic City Transit busses are transporting approximately 30-35 campers out of the canyon now. They will be shuttled safely back to the Aquatic Center’s training room.
Staff is contacting parents to let them know of the change and asking them to pick up their children at the Aquatic Center. Read More
Youth Activity Center Moving Into White Rock Town Hall Until Spring
COUNTY News:
As part of the White Rock Library and Youth Activity Center (YAC) project, the existing YAC facility must be vacated for renovations.
The last day the current YAC will be open in Pinon Park is Friday, Aug. 15. County YAC staff will be moving operations to White Rock Town Hall over the weekend of Aug. 16-17 and will re-open for business Monday, Aug. 18.

Canyon & Rover Park Tennis Courts Undergo Resurfacing Beginning Tuesday Morning

Tennis players using Canyon and Rover Parks are being asked to seek alternate courts for play while County contractors resurface these two courts over the next three weeks.
Work will get underway Tuesday morning at Canyon Court. Resurfacing begins at Rover Park’s tennis court next week.

Power Interrupted At UNM-LA And Denver Steels

Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities officials report that a power outage affecting about 100 customers in the Denver Steels neighborhood and portions of the University of New Mexico–Los Alamos began about 6:45 a.m. today.
Power was restored at UNM-LA by 7:30 a.m. and by 8 a.m. to the Denver Steels neighborhood.
The Department of Public Utilities (DPU) operates the county-owned electric, gas, water and wastewater systems under the jurisdiction of the Board of Public Utilities. The Board meets the third Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. and the public is always welcome. Read More
