Geologist Elaine Jacobs will lead hikers 12:30-2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8 along the south rim of Pueblo Canyon. This free outing is made possible thanks to the Sierra Club and Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).

Garnett S. Stokes Appointed President Of UNM

Garnett S. Stokes

The University of New Mexico Board of Regents has unanimously selected Garnett S. Stokes as its 22nd president. Stokes, 61, will succeed Interim President Chaouki Abdallah, who has served in the role since the beginning of 2017. Stokes will take office March 1, 2018.

Stokes’ selection follows a 10-month search by a 22-member committee, chaired by UNM Board of Regents’ President Rob Doughty, that included regents, faculty, students, staff and alumni. Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, was engaged in November 2016 to work alongside the committee.

I support the rule of law, which is the American way to preserve freedom. Therefore, the resolution passed by the Los Alamos School Board on Oct. 13 regarding privacy of immigration and refugee children bothers me. Y Youth Basketball Registration Extended To Nov. 3

The Family YMCA’s Youth Basketball program is a skills developmental program for youth in grades 1-6 that would like to learn the fundamentals of basketball, team participation, and to play a few games.

LAMS Native American Club Sells Pencils Thursday

November is Native American Heritage Month and Los Alamos Middle School Native American Club – the Native Hawks – will be selling scented pencils and teal ribbons 3:30-5 p.m. at Smith’s Marketplace Thursday.

The pencils are $1 each and come in scents like rootbeer, cotton candy and bubblegum.

“Smith`s Marketplace has always and will continue to support the diversity of Northern New Mexico and our customers,” said Community Specialist Kathryn Fulton.
