By PATRICK NEHER
Los Alamos Arts Council Executive Director

What is the Great Connector of people in Los Alamos (beside science)? Music! Yes, especially classical chamber music!

Back in the 70’s, there was a gathering of string players in my mother’s living room, enthusiastically sawing away at the music of Haydn (a string quartet, if my memory serves well) and, while the melodies were clear and bright from the violins and cello,

‘Carmina Burana’ In LAMS Gym 7 P.M. Saturday

By CHARMIAN SCHALLER
For Los Alamos Choral Society

At times in the last couple of weeks, the Los Alamos production of Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” has seemed like a traveling show—but it has now found a home.

“Carmina” was originally scheduled to be presented in the Duane Smith Auditorium, but as the show day approached, it became apparent that construction on the lobby of the auditorium would not be completed in time to allow for last-week rehearsals or the performance itself.

Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent Kurt Steinhaus and his staff found an unusual but practical Read More

Bringing back István Várdai for the Jan. 21 Los Alamos Concert Association’s  cello concert with pianist Shai Wosner provided the audience with a thrilling afternoon. Their choice of works gave us the opportunity to hear wonderful compostitions that are rarely heard. Works by Eastern European composers, Kodály’s Sonatina and Janácek’s Pohadka, are pieces that we have probably not heard before.

My earliest memory of an outstanding cellist in performance is Antonio Janigro with the band that he created in Zagreb, Read More

By CHARMIAN SCHALLER
For Los Alamos Choral Society

Notice to Los Alamos Choral Society (LACS) supporters:

“Carmina Burana” is moving to a new location. It will not be performed at the Duane Smith Auditorium on Feb. 10, but it will be presented on that same day, at 7 p.m., at the Los Alamos Middle School Gymnasium.

The local production of Carl Orff’s massive choral and orchestral interpretation of a collection of medieval songs was scheduled to be the first production in the newly renovated Smith Auditorium. However, it became apparent early in January that the reconstruction of the auditorium Read More
