Brown Bag: Pianist Charles Lieou Performs April 6

Charles Lieou, a pianist and postdoctoral research associate at Los Alamos National Laboratory, is making his local debut at the upcoming Brown Bag show.

Lieou’s recital will feature pieces by Bach and Schubert. The free noontime show, sponsored by Los Alamos Arts Council, is at the United Church of Los Alamos. The Brown Bag’s usual venue, Fuller Lodge, is being renovated.

Lieou explained he selected Bach’s “Partita No. 4 in D, BWV 828” because it is a “very bright piece.”

Three bands will take the stage Saturday for The Los Alamos Community Winds Band Festival Finale and Gala Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 19 at Crossroads Bible Church. Admission is free. Suggested donation is $10.

“This is such a tremendous opportunity to have an event of this caliber here in Los Alamos,” Community Winds Director Ted Vives said.

Santa Fe Pro Musica’s beloved Baroque Holy Week concerts return to the Loretto Chapel, featuring the Santa Fe Pro Musica Baroque Ensemble performing works inspired by the secular and the divine.

Vocalists Kathryn Mueller and Deborah Domanski will join the Ensemble in music by the great baroque composers Bach and Handel.

Los Alamos Piano Students Win Top Competition Prizes

Thirteen outstanding young pianists in Los Alamos came away with top prizes in the Keith Snell Sonata Contest held annually in Santa Fe.
 
A total of 38 students were entered in the day-long competition, with Los Alamos pianists garnering more than half of the prizes in seven different levels of competition. Each level—Two through Eight—had one required Sonata or Sonatina movement from the Classical Era of music.
