Los Alamos Pianist Presley Gao Wins Statewide Young Artists’ Competition

SANTA FE  The New Mexico School for the Arts announces that Los Alamos High School pianist Presley Gao and NMSA violinist Maggie King have received first place in the 2016 Jackie McGehee Young Artists’ Competition for Piano and Strings. 
 
The panel of awardees also included 2nd place winner NMSA cellist Sam Barrett and NMSA violinist Hanna Zercher who received honorable mention. All students are mentored by NMSA teachers: violinist Kerri Lay, cellist Carla Lehmeier-Tatum, and pianist Jacquelyn Helin.

Winners of the recent Santa Fe Sonata Contest will be presented in recital at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, at Crossroads Church.

In celebration of Black History Month, the Los Alamos Arts Council’s upcoming Brown Bag show will feature a collaboration of music and poetry.

Los Alamos Pianist Rheta Moazzami along with Poet and University of New Mexico Professor Dr. Doris Fields are performing in the noontime concert Wednesday at Fuller Lodge.

The concert is free to the public.

In a listing of  ways to learn more about classical music, I remind everyone that a locally produced music information program is Excursions in Classical Music. 

I have presented these programs for KRSN from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Sunday since 2006 and each week the listener can learn about a different topic with music that illustrates the theme. 

The program is streamed and listened to by New Mexicans and many others elsewhere. It has won three awards for excellence in broadcasting given by the New Mexico Broadcasting Association.

Thirty Five Local Musicians Performing In Sunday’s Music Marathon At UNM-LA For Scholarships

UNM-LA News:

Thirty Five local musicians will perform at the 6th Annual Music Marathon 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 in the University of New Mexico-Los Alamos Student Center in Building 2.  

The benefit concert will raise money for scholarships for students attending UNM-LA. Since the concert lasts six hours, the audience is welcome to come and go.

The Los Alamos Big Band will host a free dance/concert to the community 7-9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5 at Fuller Lodge to thank the community for its many years of support.
