ALBUQUERQUE — Alexander M.M. Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Gilberto Carreon Jr., Special Agent in Charge of Customs and Border Protection, Office of Professional Responsibility in El Paso, Texas, announced Dec. 19 that a federal jury returned two guilty verdicts against Oscar Orrantia after five hours of deliberation.
The jury convicted Orrantia on one count of deprivation of a right and one count of falsification of records. Judge Margaret I. Strickland presided.

New Mexico State Police (NMSP) will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and registration, insurance, and driver’s license checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during January 2024.
NMSP is bringing awareness to these events to reduce impaired driving-related fatalities through continued media attention and intensive advertising.

New Mexico State Police To Hold Second Gun Buyback Event To Promote Gun Safety And Reduce Gun Violence
On Saturday, Jan. 6, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) are coordinating a second Gun Buyback Event in Española, Albuquerque, Farmington and Las Cruces.
People may anonymously hand in unwanted guns and receive Visa gift cards in return. No questions will be asked about who owns the guns or where they came from.
Buybacks are intended to prevent unwanted or unneeded guns from causing harm or being used to commit acts of violence.
The events will take place 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Satirday, Jan. 6 at the following locations:

Uballez, United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, and Raul Bujanda, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, announced that Patrick Maestas pled guilty to assault of a spouse, intimate partner, and dating partner, by strangling, suffocating, and attempting to strangle and suffocate.
Maestas, 34, of Dulce, and an enrolled member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation, will remain in custody pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
