Fall Prescribed Burn Planned On 818 Acres Of Valles Caldera National Preserve

JEMEZ SPRINGS – The Valles Caldera Trust is planning to implement a prescribed burn project that may begin as early as Tuesday, Oct. 14 and last for two to four days.

If conditions are not right next week, the burn may occur later in the season. The prescribed burn will be on 818 acres of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, north of N.M. 4 in the Banco Bonito area near mile marker 30. Because of the location and elevation, smoke from the burn will be visible from all directions coming into the Jemez Mountains area. Smoke will linger a few days after the burn. Laura McClellan Best Predictor In Tuesday’s Pace Race

Thirty-two runners and walkers enjoyed a beautiful evening jaunt on one mile or three mile courses on Barranca Mesa and in Bayo Canyon.

Laura McClellan was the best predictor for the long course, on which runners ran around Barranca Mesa Elementary School and then down the horse trail into Bayo Canyon to the point and back Gonzales Road to Barranca School. She was off her prediction by just 8 seconds over the three miles.

RMYC, Wilderness Society And Bandelier Partner To Improve Upper Crossing Trail Of Frijoles Canyon

Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) is volunteering Saturday, Oct. 4 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act.

RMYC and The Wilderness Society will partner with Bandelier National Monument to make some much-needed improvements on the Upper Crossing Trail of Frijoles Canyon, which suffered major damage as a result of heavy flooding after the Las Conchas Fire of 2012.

Bandelier National Monument has announced five special programs being offered in October – two photo hikes with the park Artist-in-Residence, two Night Sky Programs being presented by a staff ranger who is a long-time astronomy enthusiast and teacher, and a Wilderness hike with the park Trails Lead.

Saturday, Oct. 4, Artist-in-Residence David Halpern will lead a photo hike on the Cerro Grande Trail. The trail is about 5 miles round trip with a rise of 2,000 feet, to the rim of the Valles Caldera at nearly 11,000 feet. Read More

Halloween Carnival, Hayride And Pumpkin Patch Oct. 25

Due to the Walkup Aquatic Center being closed for an HVAC Energy Upgrade, the Aquatic Center staff have teamed with Los Alamos County Recreation Department staff and the Sheriff’s Posse to hold a Halloween Carnival, Hayride and Pumpkin Patch Oct. 25 at the Sherriff’s Posse Lodge.

There will be two sessions of the event: 4-5 p.m. and 5-6 p.m.
