During the month of October, the elk becomes the star of the show here in the Jemez Mountains. Known for being more visible and vocal during the fall season, spectators flock to the Valles Caldera National Preserve for a chance to watch and hear these magnificent creatures. But what are the elk doing?

SANTA FE — Beginning Monday Oct. 14 and extending to Dec. 1, the popular Gilman Tunnels will be closed to all traffic, including motorized, non-motorized, and foot traffic to conduct a rock stabilization project.

Pajarito’s 2024 Oktoberfest Set To Celebrate Autumn With Local Breweries And Live Entertainment Oct. 19

Pajarito announces its second annual Oktoberfest scheduled for Oct. 19, 2024. This year’s festival will feature local breweries, including Bathtub Row Brewery, Boxing Bear Brewery and La Cumbre Brewery, offering a variety of craft beers that embody the essence of fall.

The festivities will commence at noon with live music performances from Eryn Bent followed by Sunbender. Admission for beer drinkers is $25.

Streamflows in Northern New Mexico have fallen to the lowest level they have had in months. The Rio Grande at Cerro near the state border near Colorado was flowing at just 66.5 cubic-feet-per-second. The Chama River above the town of Chama was at 21.4 cubic-feet-per-second. The Pecos River was flowing at 42.3 cubic-feet-per-second.

These flows are well-below normal for this time of year. They make for good fishing, but the low water requires a stealthy approach and accurate casts.

SANTA FE—Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) Fire managers from the Cuba Ranger District plan to begin ignitions on the 864-acre Sanchez prescribed fire and the 591-acre Golondrino Mesa prescribed fire as early as Nov. 7, 2024.

ADA Trail Construction Underway On Kinnikinnik Park

Parks and Open Space has announced that ADA trail construction began Monday, Oct. 4 on the Kinnikinnik Park. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of November, though the timeline may be extended if weather conditions cause delays.
