Espanola Sombrillo Vikings Win Three Championship Tournament Titles

The Espanola Sombrillo Vikings won their third championship title Dec. 11 in the tournament at Sombrillo Elementary School in Espanola. Teams that participated in the tournament include Espanola, Fairview, San Juan, McCurdy, Holy Cross, Orange Crush and Sombrillo. The 2015 YMCA Jr. Wrestling program is now open for registration until filled:

  • Season: Jan. 5 to April 17
  • Days: Monday/Wednesday/Friday
  • Time: 4-5 p.m.
  • Location: YMCA Gym
  • Grades: 1st – 6th (7th and 8th grade beginners may join, too)
  • Cost: $90 / $60 for Y members (Optional Tournaments at additional cost)

Gymnastics Olympic Medal Winner Phoebe Mills is visiting the High Flyers Gym Monday, Dec. 15 at at 1631 Central Ave.

There will be an ice cream party 7:30- 8:30 p.m. to meet Mills and sign autographs with an entry fee of $5 per person. She will bring her bronze medal from the 1988 Olympics.

School Officials Look Into Complaints Issued Against Los Alamos High School’s Head Wrestling Coach

The conduct of Los Alamos High School’s Head Wrestling Coach Bob Geyer is being investigated following complaints by parents and students of “aggressive and bullying behavior”.

“We have received complaints and we are looking into those complaints,” Superintendent Dr. Gene Schmidt confirmed this afternoon with the Los Alamos Daily Post. “Anytime a complaint is received against a staff member or coach it is investigated. We cannot go into any further detail because this is a personnel matter.”

The Los Alamos Hilltopper Varsity Hockey team plays its first home game at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12 at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink.
