Los Alamos Seventh Grader Isabel Montoya Playing for Texas United Nike Team This Summer

Isabel Montoya is 12 years old and about to spend the summer leading a big time life.

Her passion for basketball started when she was six. She was inspired by the 2012 USA Women’s Olympic Basketball Team and now after a combination of skills camps, practice and perseverance, she’s playing at a varsity level.

Just a few short weeks ago, Montoya graduated as a sixth grader from Aspen Elementary School and now plays for the Texas United Nike team out of Austin, Texas.

Fastest Swimmers Sought to Compete in Los Alamos Nick Nogar Memorial Open

The Los Alamos Aquatomics Swim Team invites the fastest swimmers registered by USA Swimming and New Mexico Swimming to compete in the annual Los Alamos Nick Nogar Memorial Open Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6 at the Larry Walkup Aquatic Center in Los Alamos. The Open is a four-session timed, final pre-seeded long course (50 meter), except for the 50-meter freestyle. There are no time standards required to enter the meet.

Splash ‘n Dash Events at Aquatics Center Start June 25

TRIATOMICS News:

Triatomics presents free Splash ‘n Dash events June 25, July 9, July 23 and Aug. 26 at the Larry Walkup Aquatic Center.

Swimmers, runners, beginning multi-sports athletes, seasoned triathletes or anyone else interested may participate in either:

  • 400 yard swim, followed by a 5K run along Canyon Drive.; or
  • 200 yard swim, followed by a 3K run along Canyon Drive.

Registration for all distances begins at 6:20 p.m. and closes at 6:55 p.m., with the first swimmer sent off at 7 p.m. sharp!

Patent Office Cancels ‘Redskins’ Trademark Registration

U.S. SENATE NEWS:

U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s decision to cancel the Washington, D.C. football team’s trademark registration.

“The U.S. Patent Office took a positive step today toward the goal of changing the Washington, D.C. football team’s name,” Heinrich said. “Racism and bigotry have no place in professional sports. Sixteen runners and walkers participated in the Atomic City Roadrunners Pace Race under cloudy and rainy skies along Pipeline Road south of White Rock Tuesday.

SPORTS News:

The Los Alamos Blast 12U AA baseball team won the Flight Championship at the New Mexico USSSA State Championship tournament June 13-15 in Rio Rancho.

The team was 2-1 in pool play and 3-0 on the final day of competition.

The LA Blast outscored their opponents 39-6 to win the Flight Championship bracket. Read More

Registration Underway for Elks Annual Golf Tournament

ELKS News:

The Elks Annual Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, June 21 at the Los Alamos Golf Course. The event has a noon shotgun start and a scramble format.

An awards presentation and steak dinner follow at the Elk’s Lodge after the tournament.

Proceeds go to Make-A-Wish Foundation; UNM Children’s Hospital; Los Alamos Junior Golf and Special Olympics of Northern New Mexico.
