Retired Los Alamos Golf Professional Dennis McCloskey received one of the Professional Golf Association’s (PGA) most prestigious awards Nov. 2, the Sun Country Section Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is given annually to golf professionals whose service is recognized by their peers as distinguished within the Sun Country Section and to the PGA.

Sign Up Open for YMCA Youth Basketball

YMCA News:

The YMCA Youth Basketball Program is open to all youth in first- sixth grades. Teams are divided based on the elementary school where a child attends, or nearest to their home, so youth can practice and play with friends and classmates. 

Grades one and two will be on co-ed teams. Girls and Boys will be separate on the older teams.

Girl’s Fusion Volleyball Holds Parent Information Meeting

Northern New Mexico Fusion Volleyball, a girls’ Junior Olympic Volleyball program, will hold a Parent Information meeting 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Mesa Public Library, in Meeting Room1. There will be a short presentation, with information materials available and an opportunity to speak with club representatives and coaches.

Ming-Yuan Lo, 8, of the Los Alamos Aquatomics set a New Mexico State record in the 100 yard butterfly Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Lobo Holiday Classic swimming meet in Albuquerque.
Lo’s time of 1:17.21 shattered the previous record of 1:23.75 set by James Zamora in February 2009. Lo’s feat was particularly remarkable as his record came while he was swimming the event for the first time. His time places him in the top 20 in the United States for his age this year.

Progress continues on the clubhouse with window installation taking place. The HVAC work is nearly complete, sheet rock work in the basement has started and a great deal of site work is taking place in the parking lot.

Speaking of the parking lot, we appreciate the patience that players have shown, as the contractor works to complete this portion of construction site work. We expect this work to be completed in mid- November and players to have access again to the main entrance and parking lot.

LAHS Earns Runner-up Plaque in NMAA’s Highest Award

LAHS SPORTS News:

Monday, Oct. 14, Los Alamos High School finished second place for the Director’s Cup. The New Mexico Activities Association awards a Director’s Cup to the top school and plaques to the second and third place winners. 

Los Alamos finished behind Piedra Vista for the 2012-13 school year and Albuquerque Academy finished third. 

Los Alamos receives points for how each of its sport teams finish in district and state as well as points for Activities sponsored by the NMAA. These activities include:

Kayli Lincoln, Aaliyah Walker and Suyana Ferreria of Los Alamos School of Gymnastics placed first in the all-around competition in their divisions Oct. 26 at a meet in Santa Fe. The gymnasts brought home 13 gold medals for their team.

Twenty-five Los Alamos School of Gymnastics gymnasts attended the meet in Santa Fe. Twelve gymnasts competed in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic (JO) Program, 10 in the USA Gymnastics Xcel Program and three, Aaliyah Walker, Anna Clark, and Suyana Ferreria, competed in both.

Los Alamos Pony Club Hosts Horse Show

Los Alamos Pony Club hosted a horse show at the rodeo arena on North Mesa Saturday, Oct. 26 and among the features was a costume class in which both horses and riders were decorated for the season. Try Hockey Free Day Nov. 23

LAHA News:

Co-sponsored by the Los Alamos Hockey Association (LAHA), this is a chance for youth of all ages to try ice hockey on for size. LAHA volunteer coaches will be available to assist with equipment fitting, helmet and skate fitting, and on-ice activities. 

Sessions begin at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 for all youth 18 and under and at 5 p.m. for girls 18 and under. Be sure to get there early to try on equipment and talk with the coaches prior to going out on the ice.
