The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) continues its Summer Family Evenings series with a unique program combining two favorite summer activities, reading and nature walks.

This collaboration between PEEC and the Los Alamos County Library System is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Los Alamos County Council to Vote on Resolution Supporting Mil Levy Campaign

The Los Alamos County Council is scheduled to vote on a resolution during today’s Council meeting supporting the upcoming mil levy election being put before Los Alamos
County voters Sept. 17.

The money generated by the 2-mil increase will be used to fund programs at The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA). If passed, this would mean the first operational increase since the branch campus was formed in 1980.

Rare Chance to Explore Abandoned Copper Mine

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is offering a rare chance to visit the abandoned Nacimiento Copper Mine near Cuba Aug.10.

The trip, led by local geology expert Patrick Rowe, will be fun and hands-on for both adults and children. Participants will explore the area, with ample chances to find beautiful specimens such as petrified wood.

Kiwanis Club Presents Scholarship to Erin Kirk

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club presented Erin Kirk with a scholarship recently. Erin will be attending the University of New Mexico and will study communication or education. From left, Her father Alan Kirk, mother Pat Kirk, Erin Kirk and Kiwanis President Don Casperson. Erin was selected because of her contribution to the community through Los Alamos Youth Leadership for the past four years and her leadership in spearheading the “Dig In Pink” as a fundraiser for a volleyball coach who had developed cancer. Registration for Los Alamos High School is rapidly approaching. Registration will take place Aug. 5-8.
