Rahim AlHaj: Master of the Oud Performs Aug. 23

Rahim AlHaj, composer and two-time Grammy nominee, celebrates the release of “Journey,” his new retrospective CD, with a special concert at The Outpost performance space in Albuquerque Aug. 23.

AlHaj is a virtuoso on the oud, a pear-shaped stringed instrument commonly used in Middle-Eastern music. Construction of the oud is similar to that of the lute. It is considered an ancestor of the guitar.

Special guest musicians include percussionist Issa Malluf, violinist David Felberg (Chatter String Quartet) and others.

Juanita Madland of Los Alamos will play a free piano concert featuring the music of Chopin, Mozart, Brahms, Ginastera and Schubert 5:30-6 p.m. Friday, July 11 at First Presbyterian Church, 208 Grant Ave. in Santa Fe.

Classical Music World: Why People Don’t Go to Classical Music Concerts

Classical music has somehow acquired a reputation for being “snooty.” As artistic director of the Los Alamos Concert Association I think about this a lot and am always looking for ways to let folks know that it ain’t necessarily so!

Here is a list of three reasons why (I think) people don’t come to classical concerts and my stab at enticing them through the door anyway.

The White Rock Artist Market will feature local artists and crafters 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 5, at the White Rock Visitor Center.

This market will include hand-crafted jewelry, hand- painted wood pieces, melted crayon art, natural beauty items, San Ildefonso Pottery and photography.

The New Mexico Army National Guard’s 44th Army Band led and conducted by Chief Warrant Officer 4 Wendy Reyes and 1st Sgt. Ralph Harris, will perform in Los Alamos at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8 at Ashley Pond Park.

The 44th Army Band is culminating its northern New Mexico summer tour of free concerts this week with performances in Los Alamos, Santa Rosa and Albuquerque.

‘Get the Brewery Open!’ Party Draws Huge Crowd

A massive crowd attended the ‘Get the Brewery Open! Campaign Party’ hosted by the Los Alamos Beer Co-op Saturday night in Central Park Square. The Beer Co-op signed a lease last week with Philip Kunsberg, owner and developer of Central Park Square to lease the space formerly occupied by the Canyon Bar & Grill at 160 Central Park Square. The Co-op plans to open its taproom in early 2015 as it will take about six months to get a license to sell beer. Renovations are already underway.
