New Mexico State Agencies Assist In Winter Storm Response

SANTA FE – Since Wednesday, multiple state agencies have supported local emergency managers and public safety teams as New Mexico faced severe winter weather.

New Mexico State Police officers and the New Mexico Department of Transportation have responded to numerous calls and have assisted hundreds of stranded motorists.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has deployed approximately 200 snowplows, loaders, and graders to clear roads statewide. Crews have been working around the clock in 12-hour shifts, continuing through the weekend.

FBI: U.S. Attorney’s Office Secures Sentencing For 2021 Murder In Church Rock

ALBUQUERQUE — A Smith Lake man was sentenced to 11 years and 4 months in federal prison for the 2021 murder of a man in Church Rock.

There is no parole in the federal system.

According to court documents, May 17, 2021, Josiah Alan Smith, 30, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, arrived at a residence in Church Rock armed with a rifle. Smith made threats against John Doe before briefly leaving the premises. Smith then returned with a revolver and fired two shots through a bedroom window, striking Doe in the back. Social Services Shares Locations For Individuals Who Need To Get Inside From Inclement Weather

COUNTY News:

During inclement weather, individuals stranded or otherwise facing the elements may find themselves in need of a safe place to stay warm.

Los Alamos County Social Services Division has identified several locations where individuals can temporarily seek shelter to warm up. While these sites may not offer full amenities such as restrooms, they provide a safe environment to avoid the elements.

The following locations are currently open to the public:

NMSP Arrests Santa Fe Teens For Shooting At Vehicle, Injuring Juvenile

SANTA FE—On Nov. 2, 2024, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Investigations Bureau was requested to investigate a shooting involving a 16-year-old victim.

State Police agents learned that on Saturday, Nov. 2, the NMSP Uniform Bureau responded to the 6300 block of Entrada De Milagro in reference to a 16-year-old gunshot victim. Scheduled Road Closure On West Jemez Road For Water Leak Repair Tuesday Nov. 5

LAPD News:

West Jemez Road in Technical Area 16 (TA16) will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 5, near the intersection with N.M. 4 to address a significant water leak in the middle of the road.

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) crews will be handling the repair, which is scheduled to take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or until the repair work is completed.

Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes during this time. Suggested detours include N.M.  4 through to Pajarito Road, East Jemez Road (Truck Route) and Main Hill.

NMSP Investigates Shooting Of Child At Home In Clayton

NMSP News:

CLAYTON – On Oct. 29, 2024, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Investigations Bureau investigated a shooting at 301 Magnolia St. in Clayton. 

Investigations Bureau agents learned at approximately 7:30 a.m., Clayton Police Department officers were dispatched to 301 Magnolia St. in reference to an 8-year-old female that had been shot inside the residence.

FBI: Mescalero Man Charged With Assault Of Minor

FBI News:

ALBUQUERQUE — A Mescalero man has been charged by criminal complaint with multiple counts of sexual abuse for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.

Thomas Lee Chaffins, 35, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, appeared before a federal judge Oct. 10 and was detained pending trial.

According to the criminal complaint, Sept. 27, 2024, Chaffins engaged in sexual acts with a 15-year-old girl, identified as Jane Doe.
