Registration Underway For Valles Caldera Runs April 23

SPORTS News:

Registration is open for the Valles Caldera Runs set for April 23.

The event includes 10k, half marathon, and marathon distance runs on dirt roads and trails in the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

All runs start and end at the Banco Bonita staging area. The runs are limited to 350 total participants. Note: NO registrations can be accepted on the day of race!

NPS 100th Anniversary Celebrated On Forever Stamps

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Postal Service will begin celebrating the National Park Service’s Aug. 25 centennial just in time for summer vacation letter writing by issuing a pane of stunning Forever stamps depicting 16 examples of our national treasures on June 2.

To create buzz and excitement among national park fans, each stamp will be previewed alphabetically over the next three weeks, beginning Monday, April 4.

More Than $20 Million In Multi-Resort Improvements Over Two Seasons!

VADITOResort officials with the largest ski area collective in the Southwest unveiled plans for additional mountain improvements at Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort, Pajarito Mountain, Purgatory Resort, and Arizona Snowbowl. 
 
As part of today’s announcement, it was revealed that the ski area collective is investing an additional $10 million for the 2016/2017 season, continuing the aggressive $10 million multi-mountain improvement campaign for the 2015/2016 season, for a grand total of $20 million over two consecutive seasons.

Canyon Rim Trail Closing For Fuels Reduction Work

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos Fire Department will be closing a portion of the Canyon Rim Trail near Fire Station #6 in order for crews to complete fuels reduction (tree thinning) activities on the following three weekends, weather permitting:

  • April 2, 3;
  • April 16, 17; and
  • April 30 and May 1.

Activities will extend approximately ¼ mile along the west end of the trail. LAFD is coordinating signage and trail closure with Open Space & Trails Specialist Eric Peterson. The trail will remain open on the east end (at the trailhead, across from Entrada Business Park.)

BANDELIER News:

One of the signs of spring in the Jemez Mountains is male elk and deer shedding their antlers. People like to collect these ”sheds”, which is fine on private land or areas administered by the Bureau of Land Management or the US Forest Service. However, it is illegal on the Valles Caldera National Preserve or Bandelier National Monument, or other National Park Service areas.
