SFNF Closes Forest Road 263, E.V. Long Campground

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest today announced the closure of Forest Road (FR) 263 and the E.V. Long Campground on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District due to extreme soil moisture and flood risk. 

The restricted area includes the E.V. Long Campground next to Gallinas Creek as well as the entire length of FR 263 behind the locked gate at Oak Flats and land surrounding the road, including the Burro Mesa Trail Head, Big Pine, Fishing Hole and Baker Flats day use areas.

Bear Camp Registration Opens April 18

COUNTY News:

Registration for the summer camp (K-6th grade) as well as Bear Camp Unplugged (5th & 6th grade) begins at 7 a.m., Saturday, April 18 at the Larry Walkup Aquatic Center.

The Aquatic Center lobby will open at midnight April 18 for customer convenience.

Bear Camp is limited to 40 campers and Bear Camp Unplugged is limited to 13 campers per week. Registration paperwork is available at the Aquatic Center or download it here.

Applications Open For Annual RYLA Camp

Aspiring young leaders are encouraged to attend Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), a week-long camp in July in the Manzano Mountains.

RYLA is a program that originated with Rotary International and has subsequently been specifically designed for New Mexico students by Rotary District 5520, which includes the Rotary Club of Los Alamos. The camp encourages servant leadership in youth by recognizing and rewarding deserving 11th grade students who are chosen to attend RYLA as an award for their past and present leadership and service activities.

Rio Grande Trail Bill Goes To Governor’s Desk

  • Legislation creates a commission to develop the Rio Grande Trail

SANTA FE – House Bill 563, “Rio Grande Trail Commission” sponsored by Rep. Jeff Steinborn, D-Las Cruces has passed in the Senate.

The bill now goes to the Governor for approval. Governor Martinez has already expressed support for creation of the Trail, stating in a news release that it would be a historic achievement for New Mexico.

Join PEEC’s Paul Arendt as he leads an exciting hike through Ancho Canyon Saturday, March 21. The group will meet at 9 a.m., and the hike is expected to last about 5-6 hours.

There are many beautiful canyons to explore in White Rock, and this PEEC outing will give participants the chance to go with an experienced guide and a group of other hikers. The hike will begin down the Power Line Trail into lower Ancho Canyon, and then it will continue on to Ancho Rapids.

Bandelier Centennial Logo Deadline Extended

A few weeks ago Bandelier National Monument sent out a call to artists to submit entries for the logo for the park’s Centennial Celebration. The deadline for entries has now been extended to Thursday, March 26.
 
Bandelier was established Feb. 11, 1916, and the staff are looking forward to a festive Centennial year.

To celebrate its 103rd birthday, Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) unveiled a new series of badges, chosen by Girl Scouts.

The badges pay tribute to GSUSA’s commitment to providing girls fun and beneficial outdoor experiences through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). In November, GSUSA began a poll for the Girls’ Choice Outdoor badges by inviting girls to vote on outdoor themes. White Rock Senior Center Becoming Social Hub

With two new programs, the White Rock Senior Center is becoming a social hub.

The community is welcome to sing old and familiar tunes at 3 p.m. every Friday. Song sheets will be provided and a pianist will accompany singers.

Additionally, the center also offers a “Gals Gab Group,” which begins at 1 p.m. each Tuesday. The social club, which started in February, is geared toward women who live alone and do not get to talk much to other women.
