Contra Dance Has Come To Los Alamos!

LARC News:

The community is invited to participate in a Contra Dance event Monday, Nov. 17 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center, 1101 Bathtub Row in Los Alamos.

A lesson will be given at 7 p.m., followed by dancing 7:30-10 p.m. The caller is Katherine Bueler and music is by the “Bo y Yo” Band. No partner is required and beginners are welcome.

This event is sponsored by LARC Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation and Aspen Ridge. An $8 donation per person is requested, which goes to benefit Friends of the Senior Center.

Atomic Tumblers Open Gymnastics Season In Taos

ATOMIC TUMBLERS News:

Four teams competed Saturday, Oct. 11 in the New Mexico season opener for USA Gymnastics. High Altitude Athletics of Taos played host to Los Alamos, Rio Rancho, and Gold Cup of Albuquerque. Ninety – two gymnasts competed in the day’s activities.

Ashley Bustos, of Los Alamos Atomic Tumblers had the highest score of the day with a 36.75. Ashley competed in the Xcel Platinum division, the highest division in the meet. The Pajarito Mountain Freeride Team is hosting a Recruitment/Registration Night at 7 p.m., Dec. 4 at 2087 47th St. for anyone interested in joining the team. 

The Pajarito Mountain Freeride Team is a traveling competitive ski and snowboard team in which boys and girls of all ages compete in Rail Jams, Slopestyle Contests and Slalom/Giant Slalom/Boardercross/Skiercross Races.

Sofia Enriquez Wins CROP Walk Logo Contest

Sofia Enriquez has won the logo contest for the 2014 CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot. Her design will adorn scores of new t-shirts to be worn by all who walk or run the course Nov. 23.

The CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot has been held annually in Los Alamos for many years. Each year a contest is held inviting all Los Alamos fourth through sixth graders to submit designs for the walk/run t-shirt. Los Alamos Middle School is seeking donations from the community of new or used sporting equipment to use at recess.

Three YMCA Basketball Skills Workshops Begin Saturday

The Family YMCA is hosting three Saturday morning basketball-skill sessions to help new players learn basic skills.

The fundamentals program will be led by Y volunteer coaches and run 9-11 a.m. Nov. 8, 15 and 22 in the YMCA gymnasium at 1450 Iris St. in Los Alamos.

Santa Fe National Forest Waives Fees For Veterans Day

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest will waive fees at many recreation sites and amenities over the Veterans Day weekend from Nov. 8-11.

“We honor our veterans each Nov. 11 and every other day of the year,” U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell said. “We hope that this time will serve as a way for our veterans and other visitors to find our national forests and grasslands as a year-round respite, a place where they can take time out for themselves.”

Work Wraps Up On Aquatic Center HVAC / Boiler Replacement

Larry Walkup Aquatic staff provided an update this morning regarding the HVAC and Boiler Replacement project. Work is wrapping up and the pool should re-open soon.

“We look forward to getting our swimmers back in the pool at the earliest possibility,” Recreation Division Manager Randy Smith said.
