Toppers Volleyball Steamrolls Capital

Volleyball is a momentum sport. Last Thursday evening the 4th-ranked Toppers hosted the 21st-ranked Capital Jaguars and it took a while for the Topper flywheel to get up to speed, but in the end the Toppers were victorious 25-19, 25-15 and 25-7.
 
With good passing from the back row and great setting by senior, Samatha Melton, the twin powerhouses of the Topper machine, Sierra Foley and Brianna Montano, combined for 27 kills.

Faubert Best Predictor In Weekly Pace Race

Madeleine Faubert was the top predictor in the weekly pace race held on the Lower Water Canyon Trail off N.M. 4 near White Rock. 
 
She was 32 seconds off her predicted time. 5 year old Anders Medin recorded a 39 second differential and was also the fastest 1 mile runner with a time of 12:58. 
 
Other accurate predictors were Duane Marr at 42 seconds off and Sue Elkins and Felix Candia both at a 45 second difference.

Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort and Pajarito Mountain Ski Area officials have announced the earliest opening dates in the resorts’ recent histories.

The lifts at Sipapu will start turning Saturday, Nov. 14 as the resort prepares to be the first ski area to open in New Mexico. Pajarito kicks off the ski season earlier this year with lifts scheduled to start turning Friday, Nov. 27.

Tuesday evening the Topper girls varsity soccer team put their 5-5-1 record on the line against the 6-3 record of the Las Vegas Robertson Cardinals.

Topper freshman, Katie Hopkins, opened scoring in the 10th minute off an assist from Sienna Ahlers. Hopkins scored again in the 15th minute off a beautiful pass from winger junior Abby Schmaltz making the score 2-0.

That score held up through halftime and until the 59th minute when senior co-captain, Jordan Henson, beat the Cardinals defenders on the left flank and buried her shot into the goal for a 3-0 Topper

You’ve heard the adage that “the best defense is a good offense”. Well, Monday afternoon at Sullivan Field the Hope Christian Huskies showed that “the best defense is a slow offense”. 
 
Leading 8-6 at halftime the Huskies took the opening kick-off and held the ball on offense for the entire 3rd period! They finally scored from the Topper 1-yard line at the 9:47 mark of the fourth quarter making the score 15-6 in favor of the Huskies.

Farmington Scorpions Win Over Hilltoppers 65-26

It wasn’t the Fourth of July, but there were plenty of fireworks and it wasn’t track season, but there was a lot of running.

Friday night the 22nd-ranked Toppers faced the 8th-ranked Farmington Scorpions at Sullivan Field and when the smoke from the green chile cheeseburgers cleared, the Scorpions got into their bus for the long ride home with a 65-26 victory.

The game had an unusual 6 p.m. start to accommodate the Scorpions long ride back to Farmington.

Sixteen dedicated runners and walkers appeared in pouring rain Tuesday evening to test their pace racing skills on the Original Turkey Trot course held on North Mesa and in Bayo Canyon.
