Weekly Fishing Report: June 17, 2024

Spring runoff has peaked early and streamflows are dropping throughout the state. This is an excellent time to fish streams like the Rio Chama, Rio de los Pinos and the Pecos. The higher flows of spring runoff put the trout in an actively feeding mood and now that the flows are dropping and easier to fish the fishing can be quite good.

Paraglider Pilot Emma Goldberg Lands At Overlook Park

Motorized paraglider pilot Emma Goldberg of Los Alamos out for a ride this morning landed at Overlook Park in White Rock. Goldberg has been flying for a year and has logged 250 flights. She sets wind direction flags on the field for taking off and landing. Goldberg spent about 50 minutes flying this morning over the local area and said she can fly up to about 2.5 hours on a full tank. NMGF To Hold Two Public Meetings On 10-year Review, Revision Of State Wildlife Action Plan For New Mexico

NMGF News:

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMGF) is holding two public meetings to discuss the 10-year review and revision of the State Wildlife Action Plan for New Mexico (SWAP).

The SWAP revision process was initiated in May 2023 and presented at the State Game Commission meeting Aug. 25, 2023.

The final revision is due to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by Oct. 1, 2025. 

The SWAP identifies Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN), their habitats, threats, and conservation actions that can be taken to mitigate these threats and benefit SGCN. Part of the revision Read More

Bandelier’s Mandatory Shuttle Service Begins June 27

Bandelier National Monument is beginning its free summer shuttle service to Frijoles Canyon on June 27, 2024.

The shuttle, provided by Atomic City Transit, boards at the White Rock Visitor Center. It is mandatory from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily except for those who meet one of the following exceptions:

  • Has a disability placard displayed on their vehicle
  • Are traveling with pets
  • Conducting park-related business
  • Organized commercial tour groups traveling in their own bus or van

The warmer weather we have been having recently will soon be moving trout to deeper water in our lakes and reservoirs. Fishing in the early mornings and evenings will be more productive soon. This will also be the case for warm water species like walleye and catfish.

Streamflows decreased or stayed relatively stable in the smaller streams of Northern New Mexico this past week. It is a little early but runoff may have peaked already. The streamflow levels dropped in the Pecos River and Jemez River.
