Douglas-fir Tussock Moth Outbreak At Black Canyon Campground In Española Ranger District

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — If you see brownish-yellow or red discoloration of trees in and around Back Canyon Campground in the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF), it may be the result of defoliation from the Douglas-fir tussock moth (DFTM).

Trees may appear to be dying, but those brown branches signal the outbreak of the Douglas-fir tussock moth, a native defoliator whose larvae (caterpillars) feed on the needles of a variety of fir tree species. The caterpillar’s appetite can result in partial or complete defoliation, resulting in tree mortality or vulnerability to bark beetles.

More rain is forecast for this coming week so streamflows may rise again. It is always a good idea to check conditions at the location you are headed to. Streamflows can be checked on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) streamflow Read More

Bartlett: More Access To Lower Bayo And Pueblo Canyons

By MELISSA BARTLETT
Los Alamos

The current Los Alamos County Parks and Recreation policy for access to the lower part of Bayo and Pueblo canyons is too restrictive and discriminates against those of us who have limited abilities.

Currently, parking is allowed only in the small dirt lot near the gate on the road that leads to the waste water treatment plant. Private vehicles that park anywhere past the gate are subject to ticketing.

This means that to access the many lovely trails of lower Pueblo and Bayo Canyons, the only option is a hike on the paved road and risk the trucks or on a small hot dusty trail Read More
