SFNF: Wildfire Prevention Ahead Of 4th Of July Holiday

SANTA FE — Every year, thousands of wildfires are sparked on public lands by fireworks. Fireworks are illegal to use in national forests every day of the year. You can help the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF)  to prevent unwanted human-caused wildfires by practicing safe and responsible campfire management.

  • Campfire rings should be clear of flammable debris for three feet in every direction.

Santa Fe National Forest Recreation Site Fees To Increase

SANTA FE — Beginning Spring 2025, fees for day use sites and campgrounds on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) will increase. This revenue is invested into forest recreation site maintenance such as trash collection, septic and vault toilet pumping, painting, cleaning, addressing the backlog of maintenance, conducting patrols, and maintaining high-use sites.

Free West Coast Swing Dancing And Lessons At Betty Ehart Senior Center Starting Monday July 1

Every Monday (except County holidays) from 7-9 p.m. everyone is welcome to free ballroom dancing and lessons at the Betty Ehart Senior Center Center. It is a Los Alamos County Activity organized by Terry Goodwin and Selmo Jaramillo. Every month they focus on a particular ballroom dance, and in July the focus is West Coast Swing.

Santa Fe National Forest Implements Closure Order In Española Ranger District To Prevent Further Unauthorized Long-term Camping, Vandalism, Trash Dumping

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) has issued a camping closure order (03-10-06-24-07) for Headquarters Well in the Española Ranger District to prevent further resource damage caused by an increase in unauthorized long-term camping, vandalism, and trash dumping.

While the closure order is in place the SFNF will conduct critical restoration and rehabilitation work to address resource damage and implement a long-term management plan for the area.

James Zola was the top predictor in the Atomic City Road Runner’s (ACRR) weekly pace race held at East Park with a 3 second differential from his predicted time.

Other accurate predictors were:

  • Zach Medin recording a 8 second difference;
  • Tony Borek at 10 seconds off; Chris Michel with a 15 second differential; and
  • Holly Walker at 21 seconds off as well as the best finisher in the 1 mile race with a time of 7:38.

There has been extensive flooding in the Las Vegas area, especially along the Gallinas River. It is best to avoid this area as crews clean up after the floods.

Spring runoff has peaked early and streamflows are dropping throughout the state. This is an excellent time to fish streams like the Rio Chama. Rio de los Pinos and the Pecos.
