Police Officers Issue Back To School Safety Reminder

LAPD News:

The Los Alamos Police Department would like to take a moment and remind motorists that school starts Thursday, Aug. 16.

Police officers will be out in school zones for traffic enforcement to ensure that all students, parents and staff are safe as the community transitions into another school year. 

LAPD also reminds motorists to stop for school buses when their red lights are flashing, and students are loading and unloading. This pertains to traffic traveling in both directions.

NNSA Update: LANL Road Construction Project

NNSA News:

Eastbound N.M. 502 traffic this week will encounter alternating lane changes as road crews continue mill and fill work on the inside and outside lanes.

Two lanes will continue to take drivers eastbound during the afternoon commute.

Albuquerque Asphalt construction crews also will begin painting traffic stripes along freshly laid roadways. Painting activities are scheduled to take place during off-peak traffic hours. Drivers are asked to watch out for the shadow car following road-striping crews.

Dangerous driving by commuters ignoring road construction safety notices have forced officials to take another step to address erratic driving behavior.

State and federal officials have agreed to take whatever measures are necessary, including narrowing width of the traffic lanes along N.M 502 and further reducing the speed limit, in order to give commuters safe passage home and to work. Local School Zone Flashing Light Testing Aug. 14-15

The Los Alamos County Traffic and Streets Department will be testing the school zone flashing lights in Los Alamos and White Rock Aug. 14-15 in preparation for the upcoming school year.

If you notice the flashing lights working during odd hours during this testing period, please do not call it in.

Please be cautious of the crews performing the tests.

Traffic Alert: NM 502 Traffic Switch During Otowi Bridge Rehabilitation Work Starting Monday

NMDOT News:

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) continues bridge rehabilitation work on N.M. 502 at mile marker 11 at the Otowi Bridge over the Rio Grande between Pojoaque and Los Alamos. 

Monday, Aug. 6 on N.M. 502, a concrete wall barrier will be placed through the work zone. Traffic will be switched over to the westbound lanes. There will be one lane of travel in each direction on the westbound lanes.

Improvements to East Jemez Road and N.M. 502 leading to and from Los Alamos will continue with traffic configurations changing often.
