Indian Pueblo Cultural Center Balloon Fiesta® Oct. 6-15

Indian Pueblo Cultural Center News:

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is hosting 10 days of special events to coincide with this year’s Balloon Fiesta, starting on Friday, Oct. 6 and running through Sunday, Oct. 15.

Activities include IPCC’s Albuquerque American Indian Arts Festival during Balloon Fiesta’s opening weekend on Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as an expanded schedule of cultural Native dances that kicks off on Friday, Oct. 6 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 15. IPCC will also host an Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration on Monday, Oct. 9.

Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra welcomes guest conductor William Waag to the podium for the opening concert of its 2023-24 season at 7 p.m. Oct. 7, at Crossroads Bible Church.  

Following the concert, a reception will be provided in the lobby.  

The program Waag has chosen for this concert begins with the Overture to Nabucco, the work that solidified Giuseppe Verdi’s career as an opera composer in 1842. Among other themes from the opera, the overture previews the “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves,” who lament both the ruin of their temple in Jerusalem and enslavement in Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar. Big-game rifle hunting seasons open in October and run practically the entire month. Campgrounds will be filled with hunters and lots of dispersed camping spots will be filled. Don’t be alarmed if you hear gunshots in the woods.

This is a prime time for anglers. Cooler temperatures will make the trout more active. Brown trout and brook trout will be spawning. Spawning male trout of both species will develop brighter and darker colors.

Community Invited To 2023 Solar Eclipse Viewing Event At Los Alamos High School Courtyard Saturday Oct. 14

LAPS News:

Community members of all ages are invited to view the annular solar eclipse in the Los Alamos High School inner courtyard 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14.

This free event features free eclipse glasses, viewing safety information, projection of the eclipse on a large outdoor screen, National Park Service programming, educational booths and science activities for all ages, school clubs, music and more.

All activities will pause 10-11 a.m. to allow participants to view the eclipse as it moves in and out of the annular phase with the maximum eclipse happening at 10:36:57 a.m.

SANTA FE — The Sangre de Cristo Chorale opens its 46th Season with a concert 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at St. Bede’s Episcopal Church in Santa Fe.

The 36-voice Chorale is led by Interim Music Director Dr. George Case and is accompanied by pianist Deborah Wagner.

The first concert of the 2023-2024 season will feature two 20th century masterworks celebrating pastoral beauty and farm life through the eyes of Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and American poet Robert Frost. Pieces by Samuel Barber and Irving Fine round out the concert.
