State Road 112 At El Vado Dam Closed May 27–Sept. 4, 2026

NMDOT News:

The closure prevents all public access across the dam, requiring travelers to use alternative routes, 24 hours a day throughout the closure period.

NO through traffic will be permitted; emergency vehicles must find alternate routes!

The closure allows for investigatory drilling and equipment staging on the roadway as part of long-term dam rehabilitation efforts and ongoing safety investigations into the dam’s foundation, following repairs that began in 2022.

I-40 & NM 344 Roadway Rehabilitation Project Begins May 27

EDGEWOOD — Travelers in Edgewood may experience traffic delays as a roadway rehabilitation project on the exit and entrance ramps from I-40 to N.M. 344 is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, May 27.

The project will include the milling and repaving of the existing roadway surface on both N.M. 344 and the entrance and exit ramps to and from I-40.

This structural pavement treatment involves removing the current asphalt layer and replacing it with new pavement to improve road conditions and extend roadway life.

NM-502 Centerline Rumble Strip Project To Begin Tuesday

The Los Alamos County Public Works Department, in partnership with the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) and under contract with San Bar Construction, announces installation of centerline rumble strips on NM-502 beginning Tuesday, May 26. Work will continue until the end of the week.

ACT Announces Temporary Service Suspensions

          • Routes 2M and Peak Service on Route 6 and 1 will be suspended beginning Monday June 1

Due to a staff shortage, Atomic City Transit (ACT) will suspend operations of Route 2M and certain peak service trips on Routes 6 and 1 beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, until further notice. The County apologizes for the inconvenience and appreciates its riders’ understanding during this time.

Work Is Resuming On US 550 Bridge Reconstruction In Cuba

NMDOT News:

CUBA — The bridge reconstruction project on US 550, in Cuba is resuming May 19.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) District Six along with Siete Inc. (Contractor) will be working overnight (7 p.m. to 5 a.m.) on US 550 northbound and southbound between mile marker 64.2-64.7, through the end of May.

One lane of traffic will be open in each direction throughout the project and speed will be reduced to 35 miles an hour in the work zone.

Atomic City Transit Extending Service To Summer Concerts Beginning Friday

The community is invited to ride Atomic City Transit to the Los Alamos Summer Concerts at Ashley Pond all summer.

The 2026 summer concert bus schedule extends service on three fixed routes to allow concert goers to leave their car at home and avoid parking hassles or a long walk to Ashley Pond.

The special bus service hours begin on Friday, May 22, and run through Aug. 28.

Community Invited To Weigh In On Green Bike Lanes

The Los Alamos County Public Works team recently installed a couple of green bike lanes along Diamond Drive. 

The team used an epoxy resin with crushed colored glass to enhance the visibility of locations where bicyclists are expected to operate, where they might be in conflict with traffic crossing the lane.

Rio Grande Gorge Rest Area To Close For Improvements

TAOS — The Rio Grande Gorge Rest Area will be closed on May 19 and May 20 to begin parking lot preservation work.

The scope of work includes crack sealing, fog sealing, and restriping of parking spaces and shoulders. During this project, there will be multiple days over the course of several weeks when the rest area will need to be closed for parking lot maintenance activities.

Ramp Closures At I-25 And NM 14/Cerrillos Road

NMDOT News:

SANTE FE — As part of the DDI upgrades at the intersection of I-25 and NM 14/Cerrillos Road, ramp closures are expected to take place beginning Monday, May 18.

The northbound on ramps from NM 14/Cerrillos Road to I-25 will be closed from 7 a.m. t0 6 p.m. on May 18 and May 19 for repaving. All motorists needing to access northbound I-25 will be diverted to NM 599. 

The southbound off ramps from I-25 to NM 14/Cerrillos Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., May 20 and May 21 for repaving. All motorists will be diverted to NM 599.
